Dark Souls' Strangest Foe - The Frog Ray - TimeLierG - 09-12-2025 Video version of this post: https://youtu.be/63-6KSlRIMM Frog Rays are the red and black frog-like enemies you find when going down further into Darkroot Garden, below where the Wolf Ring is. When the player first enters this area there's a unique animation that plays where four Frog Rays jump out of the water below and onto the ground above, an entirely unique animation, a moment in the game dedicated to this small group of frogs. It's not often this amount of care goes into such a seemingly insignificant enemy in a far off area that doesn't have much in it aside from the Wolf Ring I mentioned. These frogs drop eighty souls along with a twenty five percent chance for a Green Blossom and a fifteen percent chance for two Green Blossoms, if you need some of these early on for some reason it's a good way of obtaining some although you can just buy an infinite supply of them from the Crestfallen Merchant in Sens Fortress or from Chester in the DLC. Something always felt strange about these foes, as if they were intended for another area in the game that may have been cut. There's actually some proof that somewhat leans towards this, I mentioned this in one of my Dark Souls mysteries, oddities and urban legends videos, there's more to the Frog Rays than just their tongue. If you manage to lure a Frog Ray out of the area they spawn in and towards the upper area of Darkroot Garden, specifically where there's water puddles and then they walk into said puddle they will gain an entirely new attack that they don't normally have. This attack is very interesting, they will fire some sort of sludge ball at the player, it looks like it would either poison or even curse the target but it actually just does a small amount of damage instead. This attack may be the same one that the Mass of Souls uses in New Londo. They also have a new animation where they will also swim in the water instead of walking and jumping like they usually do. Speaking of animations, in the video version of this post I'll show what the frogs look like in the lake or pond they jump out of before they actually jump out of it, this is also some form of animation the player never gets to see. Aside from them possibly being in an area that was scrapped from the game I also feel like they were supposed to be poisonous as well just due to their design and that mentioned spit attack, even though they are fully designed and implemented into the game many things about them point to them being unfinished. I don't have much else to say on these creatures aside from something that happened to me around late 2011, I was in the area where they jump out of the water and I noticed an item bag sitting right where they spawn, I think this was before I even interacted with them, I didn't have the maximum amount of Green Blossoms either, when I tried to pick up said item it didn't do anything aside from the item grab animation implying I was trying to pick up something I already had the maximum amount of. It's possible I went afk and a player dropped something for me in that spot for some reason. Outside of all of that, that's all I can say about the Frog Rays. One last thing of note is my game crashing when defeating the Frog Rays and reloading the game in the same area where the script plays out of them jumping out of the pond. |
