Dark Souls had quite a few rumors when it came out in September 2011, some rumors took some time before being discussed on forums, however the one that was talked about almost immediately was that of the pendant, a strange item that can be chosen as a starting gift upon creating a character. It's strange as every other starting gift has an obvious use, some more useful than others for utility and for lore as well as for roleplaying purposes. Speaking of roleplaying purposes the pendants item description says "A simple pendant with no effect. Even so, pleasant memories are crucial to survival on arduous journeys.".

Due to this item description saying the item has no effect led many to believe there was one, it should be noted that before a certain patch the pendant had the same item description as the sunlight medal for some reason, I assume that was a simple oversight. Sometime after the games release Hidetaka Miyazaki mentioned the pendant in a few interviews, one time saying something along the lines of that he would never reveal the true use of the pendant, he also stated something similar to "the players should choose the pendant or nothing at all for their starting gift" which led many to do so and to go on a quest to find the true purpose of the pendant.

Over time there was more information found in-game involving this pendant, such as additional ways of obtaining it outside of players choosing it as a starting gift, a few of these methods include...

1. As a drop from Maiden Reah at the Undead Burg chapel where one of the Firekeeper Souls are, for the item to drop Petrus must be the one to slay her if you progress far enough for him to do so.

2. As a drop from the Forest Hunter covenant in Darkroot Garden in PvP.

These are the only other ways of obtaining the pendant in the game, unless of course you trade another player for it. Despite players taking pendants with them, finding every illusory wall in the game, going to Ash Lake, the Painted World and so on to try to find a secret involving it there was only one use discovered. The player can drop trade the pendant to Snuggly the crow in the Undead Asylum to obtain a Souvenir of Reprisal, there's been some theories passed around on the meaning of this, if the pendant is in some way related to Gwyndolin or Velka, it could have also been involved in a piece of cut content as there was a scrapped Velka covenant at one point in development that seems to have gotten a decent amount of work put into it before being cut.

Eventually Artorias of the Abyss was released which featured another pendant that acted as a key to enter the DLC, I always theorized that the regular pendant was related to Manus' own broken pendant, I've never heard someone mention this before but my own personal theory is that the pendant could have been hinting at the DLCs release in a very subtle way as the item descriptions mentions that the Chosen Undead and in extension the player does or will have memories with said item, this is similar to how it's theorized Manus has connections or memories with his own pendant. Speaking of Artorias of the Abyss, sometime after the DLCs release Miyazaki in another interview made one final statement on the pendant where he says that he "had a bit of an intention of playing a prank" when it comes to the pendant itself.

This statement has always been a bit odd to me considering the pendant does in fact have a use, albeit a small one, I suppose what he meant is that he was making it seem like there was a larger purpose to it as some players theorized after the game came out, some players speculated that it would unlock a third ending or another questline which is not the case, as much as Nora wants it to be the case. Over time less and less players invested time into trying to uncover something new about the item, the search never truly stopped but everyone has combed through entire game and the files within at this point, fourteen years later and nothing else has been found involving the pendant in the first Dark Souls.

Some years later after the release of Artorias of the Abyss, the sequel to Dark Souls was revealed, Dark Souls 2. Some of the directors of the game were interviewed by GameTrailers and asked about the pendant in Dark Souls and if something similar would appear in Dark Souls 2 to which they responded and said they like elements such as the pendant in Dark Souls 1 and would like to add things in Dark Souls 2 that would play with the players in terms of their curiosity. This quote also made me curious about if that plan they had to "play with the players" made it into Dark Souls 2, there's a lot of unexplained things in the game which may be related to cut content due to it's rough development and changing of directors and story but perhaps there's a lot of intentional things such as the blue flames that can appear at certain NG+ or bonfire aesthetic levels in the Majula Mansion.

After Dark Souls 2 and all of it's DLC released, including the Scholar of the First Sin version there was no pendant to be found, every item in Dark Souls 2 has a use no matter how obscure those uses are, most players were focused on theorizing about the main story of the game itself instead of the more obscure things within the game, it was only until many years after the release of the game when players started looking more closely at it. It seems like everything that could be said about the pendant has been stated, the discussions about it became more quiet. Until Dark Souls 3 released...

With the release of Dark Souls 3 in April of 2016 there were a few players discussing the pendant again due to an item that was found behind an illusory wall, most of the players didn't notice the design of this item or weren't familiar with the pendant in the original Dark Souls so this wasn't talked about too much but there were still a few posts about it online. What was this item? The Dreamchasers Ashes, used to progress Sirris' questline as well as with all of the other ashes in the game can also be given to the Shrine Handmaid, once given to the her she has dialogue where she claims that "it's the stuff of a fool" and says that it comes from one who is "clinging to dreams", you might be wondering why she says this and what the Dreamchasers Ashes are, if you look closely at the item you can see it's someones hand clutching what looks like a pendant.

Will this be the final mention of the pendant, was this the conclusion? Who knows.

Here's something I usually talk about on my blog and in my videos, RuneScape's strangest distraction and diversion, the Champions' Challenge. This also serves as a history to it.

* Part I - What is this challenge?

The Champion's Challenge was introduced on the twelfth of December in 2005, when this was released the player could enter a new basement in the Champions' Guild right behind the large table and be greeted to an arena, inside of this arena are a bunch of challengers with their own unique mechanics and rules that must be followed. There's also Larxus the butler who I will speak more on in a moment.
Before you can fight the opponents in the arena you'll need to find their respective champion scroll, there's ten scrolls in total, each representing a different race. Imp, goblin, skeleton, giant, zombie, ghoul, hobgoblin, earth warrior, lesser demon, and jogre plus an additional, mysterious scroll that is seemingly unobtainable. These scrolls are all a one in five thousand drop from said respective races, some obviously more difficult to obtain than others. Once you obtain a scroll you can fight in the arena, as I've said the fights all come with their own rules but are absurdly and laughably easy, the champions themselves do look very cool though, they all have their own unique models.

Here are the mentioned rules and mechanics...

* The skeleton champion can only be fought using ranged.
* The imp champion can teleport around the arena and the player cannot use special attacks.
* The goblin champion can drain the players prayer and can only be defeated using magic.
* The giant champion must be defeated with melee.
* The hobgoblin champion can only be defeated with magic or range.
* The zombie champion, the player can only use melee or ranged.
* The ghoul champion is pretty unique, you cannot bring armor or anything in your inventory into the arena.
* The earth warrior champion, the player cannot use prayer.
* The jogre champion, the player can only use melee or magic, he can poison the player as well.

* The lesser demon champion is the most interesting, at least I believe so, the player cannot use any equipment at all during the fight and it's seemingly impossible to craft or fletch any weapons inside of the arena for this fight in specific.

Even though I said there are ten champions there is one more you have to fight if you've defeated all of the others, Leon d'Cour, the human champion. He doesn't allow the player to have anything in their inventory for this encounter. He is the only champion that doesn't require a scroll to challenge, however, there is an unused champion scroll associated with him, simply called "Champion scroll", oddly enough it was later renamed in 2017 in Old School RuneScape to "Leon's champion scroll" despite still being unused.

I mentioned how the champions look before, here's how they looked at an earlier point in RS2. (I'll show this off in the video version of this post.)
I find some of these restrictions odd, especially the imp one where you cannot use a special attack inside of the arena during the fight.

* Part II - What are the rewards?

In one of my RuneScape urban legends, mysteries, rumors, oddities and secrets posts I mentioned how strange the rewards are, it feels like Jagex didn't have time to finish this distraction and diversion, here's the reason why I think this. In RS2 upon defeating a champion a banner is placed on the wall of the outer arena, close to where Larxus walks around. The banner represents the race of the champion you defeated, there's of course ten banners, these don't do anything and are just for show. Before I continue I'd just like to mention, in an MMO, an RPG or any other kind of game for that matter it's understandable that there's a few things that are just for fun, not everything needs a purpose, these games aren't made for the recent influx of players that want to 100% everything, to max or to complete all of the quests, these games are simply to be enjoyed, to walk around the world and be a part of it, to be fully immersed.

With that said, the rewards don't make any sense and I'm not talking about the banners, upon a champion being defeated you are given a small amount of HP and slayer xp, it all adds up to a little over 40k each if you've defeated all of the champions. The xp comes from a champions lamp. This has always been odd to me, when I first started playing in late 2005 I heard only a little about the challenge, later on in 2006 is when I started to do research on this distraction and diversion, I thought there would be some other kind of reward instead of it just being a small amount of experience.

Eventually a few more rewards were added in later years, I know in RS3 it's possible to refight champions to gain more experience every week and it's also possible to get a title called "Champion of Champions". As for other things added around this date, there's a bank chest that was added and they made it so that losing a fight allows you to fight the champion again without having to get another scroll. This stuff was added on the first of June in 2015 along with the xp being buffed along with the champions' stats. Around 2016 new champion models were added.

As for OSRS, they added the best reward, the cape that Leon wears, it's a blue cape with three yellow creatures on it, they look like lions to me. It's also purely cosmetic as it should be. I felt like this should have been the reward from the start.

Going back to RS2 for a moment, in late RS2, specifically November 9th 2009, they added three more champions and their scrolls. These consist of...

* The aberrant spectre champion, he can only defeated with a two handed weapon.
* The banshee champion, prayer and melee are not allowed in the arena.
* The mummy champion, shields, offhands and two handers are not allowed.

On this same date a few other challengers here were added, a leprechaun who doesn't require a champion scroll to fight and Glophren, the second champion of champions like Leon. You can only use magic against Glophren.

* Part III - Minor Updates

Aside from the updates I mentioned there are a few other minor ones such as...

* In OSRS there was a colored message in the chat that was added when you receive a scroll, this was added on June 25th, 2015. An update in 19th of January, 2017 made it so that all enemies of a species can drop a champion scroll, there was a few exclusions before this. On December 16, 2021 another message was added to the chat if you received a duplicate scroll drop, this is similar to the duplicate messages when receiving the same pet you already have. I saw a few of these myself, specifically for the giant champion scroll.

* Outside of OSRS, on the the 9th of November in 2009, calling beads were added to the game, the player can obtain these by defeating a champion for the first time, when used it summons an imp follower holding a banner, the banner that he holds can be changed, you can make it display a picture of a champion you defeated or the number of champions you defeated, examining the imp follower also shows this information. There was a glitch that was patched on the 12th of February where the player could obtain the beads just by defeating the Leprechaun who didn't require a scroll. November 17th, 2009, the area around the ladder was changed slightly and the Tzhaar and Werewolf champions switched thrones. There are more, smaller updates to speak on but I'll leave it at that for now.

* Part IV - Facts

1. Zanik can sometimes be found in the area.

2. The imp champion banner uses the early RS2 human look for the imp.

3. There's a strange message by Larxus if you try to teleport out of the upper area, he says "there's a ladder for a reason".

4. There was a typo in the chat message that was added on the 16th of December of 2021 in OSRS in regards to obtaining a duplicate scroll drop for some time.

5. You can drop a champion scroll on the ground and pick it up after defeating said champion, the scroll will be deleted from your inventory if you talk to Larxus and you'll get some rare dialogue from him that states "You've already defeated this champion, the challenge is void.".
I've been working on this post on and off for about a year and I think it's time I finally wrap it up, there are more details about it to mention but I'll save it for another time. The reason why I've held off on posting this is I was hoping to max sooner as I was going to do the champion challenge myself after, I'm still not maxed at the time of me writing this which is 1/4/2026. Only this section of the post was written on that date, as I've mentioned the rest was written close to a year ago if not a year ago. I'll show a few screenshots of the champion scrolls I obtained on my iron, I never received any of these in RS2 when I was younger in 2005 or after, at least I don't think I did.

Goblin champion scroll from a Graardor minion.

What's strange is that I thought I had more scrolls than this, I assume the amount of giant ones I received is making me think that. Also my husband who's new to RuneScape obtained two skeleton champion scrolls from the Ape Atoll dungeon when he was training range, he also received a giant one as well.

* Part IV - Facts

I was going to write a lengthy blog post on this but I've been very busy as it's just about to be Christmas day in about twenty minutes, long story short Gregg Mayles revealed documents regarding the plans they had for Stop n Swap back in the day, these plans included having the player obtain the ice key from Banjo Kazooie and cartirdge swap it to DK64 (which was already theorized to be the case judging from the unused freezer), the player would have the ice key now in DK64 which would eventually be transferred over to Banjo Tooie by swapping it over when the game released. A cutscene in Banjo Tooie would play, this cutscene would show the unused Banjo fridge from DK64 opening which is basically telling the player to swap the ice key over to Tooie. Another game was going to be involved after this as well.

Instead of me explaining the rest (there's actually a lot to speak on) you can read it yourself on Gregg's own profiles. I mentioned this a few times already but I'm always delighted to see a vidya mystery as old as this being solved however there's always that other feeling of "oh, the mystery and theorizing is over" which makes me wish it were still a mystery as it's one less thing to talk about in regards to video game mysteries, this is only a feeling and I personally don't mind that the mystery has been solved, I'm sure Gregg is glad that he got the word out so everyone finally stops asking him about it along with others from the old Rare. That's something I should mention when it comes to these mysteries in games, nobody should bother game developers about this kind of stuff unless it's a consensual interview out of respect for said developers and as I've said, simply getting an answer like that with no effort in regards to a mystery may be disappointing. Some video game mysteries are best left in the shadows, only spoken of in quiet on an old message board every so often, much like picking up an old game again out of your attic to feel that sense of wonder and intrigue, and sometimes, just sometimes, you'll discover something new on your own.

SoF has been around since 2012, players progress hasn't meant anything for a long time but at least it's being fixed now. MMOs should be dedicated to players who earn everything they achieve, not the ones who say "I don't have time for the game" and want our childhood games we played as kids to be made easier for them, MMOs should never be made easier.
Dark Souls' Strangest Foe - The Frog Ray

Video version of this post:
https://youtu.be/63-6KSlRIMM

Frog Rays are the red and black frog-like enemies you find when going down further into Darkroot Garden, below where the Wolf Ring is. When the player first enters this area there's a unique animation that plays where four Frog Rays jump out of the water below and onto the ground above, an entirely unique animation, a moment in the game dedicated to this small group of frogs. It's not often this amount of care goes into such a seemingly insignificant enemy in a far off area that doesn't have much in it aside from the Wolf Ring I mentioned. These frogs drop eighty souls along with a twenty five percent chance for a Green Blossom and a fifteen percent chance for two Green Blossoms, if you need some of these early on for some reason it's a good way of obtaining some although you can just buy an infinite supply of them from the Crestfallen Merchant in Sens Fortress or from Chester in the DLC.

Something always felt strange about these foes, as if they were intended for another area in the game that may have been cut. There's actually some proof that somewhat leans towards this, I mentioned this in one of my Dark Souls mysteries, oddities and urban legends videos, there's more to the Frog Rays than just their tongue. If you manage to lure a Frog Ray out of the area they spawn in and towards the upper area of Darkroot Garden, specifically where there's water puddles and then they walk into said puddle they will gain an entirely new attack that they don't normally have. This attack is very interesting, they will fire some sort of sludge ball at the player, it looks like it would either poison or even curse the target but it actually just does a small amount of damage instead. This attack may be the same one that the Mass of Souls uses in New Londo. They also have a new animation where they will also swim in the water instead of walking and jumping like they usually do.

Speaking of animations, in the video version of this post I'll show what the frogs look like in the lake or pond they jump out of before they actually jump out of it, this is also some form of animation the player never gets to see. Aside from them possibly being in an area that was scrapped from the game I also feel like they were supposed to be poisonous as well just due to their design and that mentioned spit attack, even though they are fully designed and implemented into the game many things about them point to them being unfinished. I don't have much else to say on these creatures aside from something that happened to me around late 2011, I was in the area where they jump out of the water and I noticed an item bag sitting right where they spawn, I think this was before I even interacted with them, I didn't have the maximum amount of Green Blossoms either, when I tried to pick up said item it didn't do anything aside from the item grab animation implying I was trying to pick up something I already had the maximum amount of. It's possible I went afk and a player dropped something for me in that spot for some reason.

Outside of all of that, that's all I can say about the Frog Rays. One last thing of note is my game crashing when defeating the Frog Rays and reloading the game in the same area where the script plays out of them jumping out of the pond.

This post is for a small portion of those who treat games as checklists, this is a message for completionists and those who talk down to others for not having max stats, an infernal cape, low boss KCs, not two or three ticking and so on. This game is not for you, it was never made for you, the Gowers have never intended for you to max that account if it was even you, yourself who have done so to begin with. The Gowers never even intended for someone to achieve a single 99 at first. That collection log will never be filled and was only added to satiate this small portion of players who treat video games as a checklist, there's a lot of games that were never intended to be completed one hundred percent, there's some quests that were created with the idea that only a select few players would complete them, I am speaking about role playing games, RPGs.
It's in the name, "roleplay", there was no such thing as "xp waste" back in the day and it's completely unnecessary for me to even mention that to anyone else, the only ones who don't know this are those who are new to the internet, games and roleplaying in general which is absolutely fine by itself but when you start ignoring culture you become ignorant or arrogant and have no right to insult a veteran of the game who has no idea what streamer culture is or portable toilet max efficiency is, at the end of the day the veteran plays the game because it's a game, because it's entertaining, he or she does not play it to watch a number go up, he or she is satisfied with completing a few quests or excelling in a single skill such as crafting to help his or her friends get a glory and one of those friends chooses to be a smith to make their friends armor or weapons. What are you to them? You, who supposedly maxed everything mostly by themselves, what was your purpose to others, what was the purpose of your progress, what role did you play in the world of RuneScape with all of it's world building, it's characters, it's storytelling, did you fill any role at all in this roleplaying game?
I noticed a lot of newer players don't respect the game, they will use stolen valor and have others play the game for them, they pay for these services in the game or outside of it just so they can brag about something they didn't earn online, I feel as though those who insult others in the game didn't earn what they have because if they did earn it then they'd come to the realization it doesn't matter what they have over someone else as the other player has memories and they do not. Would you believe me if I told you that there's thousands of supposed players in the game that don't know what RS1 or RS2 is despite playing a 2007 version of RuneScape 2? I've read comments online of others insulting people for using the term "RuneScape 2" and making jokes at them for using the term because those ones making jokes don't know anything at all about the history of the game. I don't consider myself a veteran of the game as I started playing in late 2005 but you could imagine how obnoxious it is to have a player from 2014 or 2016 call you a noob while not knowing the true purpose of the game, I assume most of you know the significance of those years and their impact on the internet as a whole, the internet has become more and more accessible over time and it's had an intense impact on many games, not just RuneScape.
Video games are meant to be unique experiences for each player, each player was usually always meant to see something different than the last, some players will miss a holiday event or item that will never return and that's why those events and items are special, they are special memories that only a few select people have and if you are one of those so called "fomos" then these games aren't for you either, if everyone has those items the purpose they serve is no longer there, a question I would pose to them is why do they want the items that are discontinued? Do you think you are owed them despite not participating in the event from years past? You cannot experience the past no matter how hard you try, you missed out on it and if you ever got your hands on that item the memories don't come with it, face it, you missed out on it. It's time to grow up and move on. This goes back to them treating video games as a checklist, you aren't owed one hundred percent completion when you purchase a game, you aren't even owed an ending, there's things in life that you can't get.
That's my rant for the day.
