~ Tektonix ~
This memorial site for this mans Onix always stuck out to me, I didn't play the gen 1 remakes too much when I was younger but when I reached the Sevii Islands and saw this I kind of just sat around the little island and took in the view, it also made me a bit sad, probably the first time a video game managed to make me feel that way. You can place a can of lemonade on the memorial and Tektonix's owner here will give you the TM for facade. I figured there would be more to do here back in the day but it's just a neat piece of scenery.
~ Hearthome Cathedral ~
When talking about mysteries in the Pokemon games this is one that comes up a lot, in DPP you can find a unique cathedral or church in Hearthhome that's impossible to miss, there is nothing to do or find in this cathedral, it's completely empty except for a lot of characters who speak some wisdom to you, what gets people the most is how there's no music inside.
In a video game that's full of music when you enter an area where there is none it makes you think something important is going to happen, especially in a unique place like this.
I and many others online think this was going to be where you would obtain an event item such as the azure flute or some other kind of event item, this place seems like it would be very important to the story as well but there's just nothing here.
~ Vermilion City Construction ~
Another popular mystery, what is the construction site in Vermilion City going to be turned into when it's complete? Game Freak had quite a few chances to do something with it, especially with GSC, I haven't played the Let's Go games but I think I saw that it's still empty in those as well.
~ Mossdeep White Rock and Space Station ~
This is one that we all tried to figure out as kids, the white rock that's right outside of the Mossdeep space station, I don't remember the exact dialogue but a character standing next to the rock says something about a wish so everyone assumed this was connected to Jirachi in some way, maybe it was during the development of the game. I always found it odd that Jirachi never received it's own event area and you just got it from that Colosseum bonus disc among other methods.
Another number of things that are strange with this place is that it barely plays a role in the story and the role it does play makes no sense in regards to Team Magma wanting to make a volcano erupt, one of the engineers saying what your playtime is in a cryptic way and in the number of weeks instead of hours, something even stranger is that you can't access this place when Groudon or Kyogre are causing the weather issues. I would mention the differences between Ruby / Sapphire and Emerald in terms of the look of the station but that's probably just them not being satisfied with the original design.
~ Altering Cave ~
Altering Cave is an area that opens up after you defeat the Elite 4 in Emerald, there's a copy of it in FRLG but it goes by another name which I forgot, this cave was going to be used in an event that would distribute gen 2 Pokemon. I remember hearing a lot of rumors a few months after release that you could find all sorts of Pokemon here, quite a few people saying you could get mythical Pokemon, while I didn't believe that I spent some hours a day trying to get something to happen in there, eventually I found a shiny Zubat which was cool.
~ Smeargle's Tail Colors ~
This is an odd one, there has always been a lot of inconsistencies with Smeragle's tail color, it was originally red with the shiny being green despite art at the time showing it with a green tip, in Stadium 2 it has a lot of different colors, if I remember correctly I think this had to do with the nickname? I could be wrong on that one, I never used Smeargle before let alone a nicknamed one. Then gen 3 came around and the normal and shiny colors were swapped for good, except in Colosseum and XD where it's red again due to it reusing models from Stadium, the shiny version is blue in these games also. There's probably some examples I'm missing with this.
~ Artisan's Cave ~
Speaking of Smeargle, Artisan's Cave. At least the Altering Cave has an explanation for it but this one doesn't as far as I'm aware, it's a cave under the Battle Frontier that just has Smeargle in it along with a lot of vitamins, it's in a pretty obscure area as well. The size of the room makes me question the purpose of it further, it really is a massive cave. Maybe it had another purpose at one point, it feels like a place where you would find a legendary.
~ Event Only Areas ~
I absolutely love the concept of these locations, mysterious, limited time areas where you can get legendary or mythical Pokemon. I remember watching a lot of videos showing these off as a kid and having this feeling afterwards like there could always be more to games, things left undiscovered. The only event I've taken part in was the Shaymin one, seeing Seabreak Path open up will always be one of my favorite memories with Pokemon and I'm sure it's the same for many others.
Something I never understood is what's known as these new age "fomo" people who become upset at limited time things in life, I dislike when developers cater to them and ruin the memories some people could have had, the reason why discontinued items and events are special is because you can no longer obtain the items or visit said events, the people that want them afterwards will feel nothing if they are given those things because they weren't there to experience it, they have no memory of it and if given them now it will not be a new memory for them but just something that everyone got to experience.
